We don’t go to church; we’re not a religious family, even tho I was born & raised Catholic. My son goes to 1st grade in a public school. He told me tonight that he’s the only one in his class that doesn’t go to church. Some of the kids, apparently, take offense to that and to some of the phrases he uses (like “oh my god”). A few of them have questioned him as to “well then who created the first man & woman?” He says to me, “I don’t want to hurt their feelings, Mommy. But they just don’t get it.” (My son, the non-believing “heathen” doesn’t want to hurt THEIR feelings btw.) I told him that when they ask what he believes in, or what his religion is, that he can say “Science”. He says to me, with a smile on his adorable face, “That’s right! I believe in FACTS!”
I love him.
My nephew is the most amazing kid I’ve ever known, or ever will know. I love him more than life itself. At age 7 he’s more of a fully realized person than most adults I know.
And the way he’s treated at school by the faculty over his anxieties and by the students over shit like this makes my faith in humanity plummet to dangerous new levels.
