Likely one of the most-wanted pieces of music from “Deep Space 9” is this 6-minute track from the series finale. Entitled “Finality” it’s one of the many, many gems from the recently released 4-disc set of music celebrating the shows 20th anniversary - and I might add, the first release of DS9 music sans a compilation album since the pilot episode score in 1993. The track begins with Sisko and Kassidy Yates’ farewell, and ends with the “Just the Way you Look Tonight” jazzy montage played over the flashback memories and good-bye scenes. Enjoy, Niners! |

Just ordered mine. They went up for sale at 4:00 pm EST (8 minutes ago at the time of posting these) - limited to 3,000. This is is the first time DS9 has had a solo soundtrack release since 1993. The only other DS9 music to come out has been part of two series-wide compilation albums where it got one-fourth of the space on the disc. So… yeah. It be rare! :D
So go to LaLaLandRecords.com and buy! :D

So there’s been some talk on my dash about which version of the DS9 theme is the best and… frankly, everyone’s wrong. Because the best version is neither the early years nor the later years. It’s a version never heard on the show. It’s a concert version done by (and I could be wrong on this but I believe) the City of Prague philharmonic for one of those Star Trek compilation knock-off albums. And it’s the early theme meshed with one of the pilot episode tracks and… yeah. It’s the best. So listen and then thank me for adding it’s existence to your life. :P I’ve always imagined it as the title theme to the DS9 movie we’ll never get. :( I can picture the credits and then as it transitions in the middle, us going through the window to Sisko - nay, Kira’s - office, where we find her holding the baseball and going out into Ops and taking it all in and… I can’t go further without the feels… |

My (knock-off) U.S.S. Defiant NX-74205 dedication plaque, signed by Avery Brooks (Captain Sisko) and Michael Dorn (Lt. Cmdr. Worf). I hope to also get Nana Visitor and Terry Farrell to sign it one day. All four of those characters commanded the ship at some point. It’s on my office wall right next to my door and light switch. The official one done by Franklin Mint is really impossible to find, and even then not for less than $150-200. |

Cross-fandom trivia: if not for this “liquified person” technique being developed for 1991’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” we would not have had the character of Constable Odo on “Star Trek: Deep Space 9” anywhere near how he was. |

Another of the top ten greatest monologues in Star Trek history, from without a doubt my favorite episode of all time, “In the Pale Moonlight” from DS9’s sixth season. Starfleet is the tower of virtue, duty, and honor in Star Trek. To hear these words come from the mouth of a Starfleet Captain? Shocking doesn’t begin to describe it. The fact that it’s all true and a conservative summary of the episodes events? Wow… But as a later episode of the series said and was titled… Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges. In Times of War the Law Falls Silent. If anyone ever had a doubt whom the most badass captain is? The one who would truly do the “very messy, very bloody business” that needed be done? This puts the nail in the coffin of such a debate. ((Like This? Check Out My Archive and Follow Me!)) |

Since joining Tumblr, I’ve found a whole throng of people who are in some stage of becoming a Trekkie. Some have only just seen the new (2009) film and want to get into the real ‘meat and potatoes’ of it, while others have seen a handful of this or that and want to get the whole picture. With a franchise as large as this one though, that’s an intimidating prospect for many.
Also, a lot of people want to see things “in order” as you might say. The way the stuff came out, and the way the fans back then saw it. Which for the most part is easy. Until it’s not. And that time is basically a 6-year span from 1993 to 1999 when there where 2 series on at the same time. And though they did not interact really, you can get confused on occasion.
First up is a list of short-hand terms for the series and movies.
Series:
Movies:
So there are three ways to watch, IMHO…
OPTION 1: Chronologically.
I do not advise this, because it puts the last series to air (“Enterprise”) which is a prequel, in front of the “Original Series” and honestly, “Enterprise” is the weakest of them all. Also as a prequel, you lose something in the translation. So we won’t go much further with that option.
OPTION 2: Series Order.
This is the easiest, this is the simple way. You watch all of one series, finish it, and then move on to the next. The movies can jumble this a little bit, though so I’ve broken them up. The order is as follows…
Why do I put the TNG films broken up like that? Well, the first three of them where done while DS9 was on the air. While “Nemesis” has a rather big spoiler for the end of “Voyager” in it. So that’s just the safest way to do it. “Enterprise” comes last because even though it was set 100 years before TOS, it’s done last.
OPTION 3: As We Got It (Altered Chronological)
The last option is a little complicated, but it’s the best way in my opinion. This is how the fans got it. How it was released. It will mean a lot of alternating during the 1990s series and films, but it’s how it was meant to be seen.
At TNG Season 6 is when it gets complicated as between episodes 11 and 12 is when DS9 premiered. It stays pretty complicate throughout. So, this is where the alternating starts (and will not stop for a long time!)
Now you might look at that last one and say, “Woah, that’s… complicated!”
It is. And it isn’t. It’s a guide; it’s not something that if you follow and get mixed up on, the world will end. It’s just how we got the material in the first place. If you are good at following directions? No problemo. If not? Go with Option 2, lol. Either one will get you there. ;) Option 3 is the sort of “advanced studies” class, while Option 2 is your easiest and most relaxed route. Again, Option 1 is a bad idea. Truly bad.
If anyone has any questions, at any time on your trek (pun intended!) I’m always here.
