I’ve only ever seen RDM’s sci-fi works - TNG, DS9, and BSG. So I can’t really say if I’m a fan of his overall. I think he’s taken the restraints placed on him in his Trek work and used them well to make BSG, but towards the end of BSG and since, he’s been going further and further from sci-fi into fantasy, and that isn’t somewhere I could follow. The last project I heard of from his was a pilot that didn’t sell where magic was a normal part of modern day life and cops trying to solve crimes had to deal with such…
As far as the old Battlestar… it’s terrible. Simply terrible. Do not waste an iota of your time with it. It’s a product of late 1970s television. It’s as campy as the 1960s Adam West Batman. That they tried to base a television series about the genocide of a race and the survivors fleeing their destruction in that era of TV was ludicrous. The very first regular episode, they stop off for some fun at a freaking casino planet! Ugh. It can not be compared to modern BSG in any way, shape, or form. I cringe when scrolling the BSG tag and someone has posted something about it. The only people I’ve ever known who liked it all did so because they had watched it as a kid and/or when it first aired and so their enjoyment of it was purely nostalgia.
